A near constant in the tenure of fourth-year Central Michigan coach Ernie Zeigler has been the contribution of senior guards Jordan Bitzer and Robbie Harman. And even that, as recent teams saw their rosters in flux through a mix of transience and malfeasance, ended last year, when Bitzer was ineligible to play the first semester. Back on the court for good, the Chippewas get their most out of Bitzer now. In a 69-53 loss Tuesday at Wright State, he played 38 minutes. Hard not to keep him out there, as in that game he was their best rebounder, post-up scorer, perimeter defender, overall transition player and three-point shooter. Against a talented Wright State backcourt, Bitzer was 6-for-9 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from downtown Dayton, for a team-high 16 points. He had a game-high 10 rebounds. If you go 10-deep from all the colleges in Michigan, Bitzer has a chance to make the mythical team, he's that good.

Two former Michigan high school basketball players, Devin Searcy, a 6-foot-10 junior from Romulus, and Paul Williams, a 6-4 sophomore from Detroit Renaissance, combined to give No. 21 Dayton two points in a 71-65 loss to No. 9 Villanova Friday in Puerto Rico. While both are role players for the Flyers, surely then can play better than they did. Williams' goose egg was disheartening, because the day before he scored 13 points, including the game-winning three-pointer, in a win against Georgia Tech. Searcy's paltry line was more expected -- he was a project with pedestrian upside as a prep, and remains limited as a collegian.

He may have never won a state championship or Mr. Basketball at Grand Ledge, but no recent former Michigan prep star can match the post-high school body of work presented by Al Horford. He won back-to-back NCAA titles for Florida before becoming the No. 2 pick in the 2007 draft to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks' starting center, Horford averages 13.5 points and a team-best 10 rebounds for an 8-2 offensive powerhouse. Here's a look at Horford's 12-point, 13-board performance in Atlanta's impressive 97-86 win Friday at the Boston Celtics. The amazing thing is, despite that solid performance against the NBA's elite, Al can still get so much better.
