The playmaking and foul shooting of 6-foot-4 senior DeAndray Buckley, inside presence of 6-6 junior Justin Moss and perimeter shooting of 5-9 senior Derrick Stewart helped Romulus to a 76-65 win over Chicago Orr in the "Sportsmanship & Violence Prevention Classic" at Muskegon Heights. The undefeated Eagles are Bankhoops.com's No. 1 ranked team in Class A. Buckley was too big and aggressive for Orr to handle. While not a partiicularly smooth or creative ball-handler, he executes Romulus' drive-and-pitch well and is good at finding three-point shooters out of it. He also had a pretty fast break assist to Moss to end the first quarter. He didn't shoot well, but Buckley was able to bull into the lane and lived at the line in the second half to finish with 21 points. Buckley added eight rebounds and five assists. He played defense, too, able to stay in front of smaller guards as well as mix it up physically.
Romulus didn't run plays for Moss, but the Plymouth transfer is capable of producing without them because of his strength, hands and toughness on the boards. Moss' body control is remarkable for a kid so big. He often matched up with Orr's 6-5 Mychael Henry, a top 20 junior in Illinois, and held his own. He plays with a mean streak, twice fouling instead of allowing a dunk. Moss will be even better when Romulus is able to get productive minutes out of his backup, 6-6 junior Stephon Edwards.
Stewart may essentially be a 5-9 shooting guard, but he's the perfect system player. He knocked down five three-pointers against Orr en route to 24 points. Just as important was his defense, continually stifling penetration and drawing two charges. |
